Welcome to Active Adults, the gateway to great health, lifestyle and exercise for the ageing population in Moonee Valley. We have an extensive program on offer at both Ascot Vale and Keilor East Leisure Centres including a variety of group fitness classes, and a prominent social community including morning tea's, outings and luncheons.
BENEFITS OF ACTIVE ADULTS
The initial benefit of joining our Active Adults program, is that you are taking positive steps towards improving your own health, vitality and longevity. Evidence has shown that regular exercise has several benefits for physical and mental wellbeing, including minimising and prevention of serious health concerns such as heart disease, stroke, dementia, arthritis, to name a few. Benefits also include improved strength, flexibility and mobility which help to improve balance and coordination, not to mention the added benefits of feeling happier, enjoying improved sleep, and mental clarity. You’ll also start to feel better, because when your body is healthy, your mind starts to feel healthy as well.
The added benefit of Active Adults is establishing and developing new friendships that you will make as a result of our regular exercise classes and social activities. We know that exercise is always more enjoyable with friends, and having a regular routine not only helps with implementing some structure into your week, and focusing some time on your health and wellness, but also creates regular interaction with other like-minded people, creating connection and establishing friendships.
WHO IS ACTIVE ADULTS FOR?
Our Active Adults program is primarily aimed towards an ageing community (50yrs+) however, all ages are welcome.
We understand that it can be a bit overwhelming to go to the gym or a group fitness class, especially if you haven’t set foot in a gym for a very long time. We like to bring an element of fun, connection and community to our Active Adults classes, to remove any apprehension newcomers may have.
Whether you are looking at coming to the gym for the very first time, or you’re wanting to make a return after a long break as a result of injury, illness, grief, pregnancy, or any other curveballs that life throws at us, you can rest assured that you will always have somebody available to answer any questions you have, explain anything you may not understand, demonstrate exercises suitable for you (if you have physical or mobility limitations), and can introduce you to a group of people who can provide support, and will always be up for a chat after a class.
WHAT TYPES OF EXERCISE / CLASSES DO YOU DO IN ACTIVE ADULTS?
We have a variety of classes available as part of our Active Adults program:
AQUA
Both Ascot Vale and Keilor East Leisure Centres offer a number of Aqua classes.
A typical Aqua class is focused around cardio and resistance training, which is choreographed to music. This type of classs will get you into the pool, and increase your heart rate to improve your cardiovascular system, whilst also working on developing muscle strength and tone.
Warm Water Aqua classes have a much more gentle approach, combining slow and controlled movement utilising pool noodles and aqua dumbells to support the body in terms of flotation, so that your joints and muscles can receive the benefits of the workout, without putting pressure on them.
STUDIO
For our studio classes, we have Active Adults, and MIOLI (Move It Or Lose It). These classes bring a focus to improving muscle strength, flexibility and balance, by providing functional movement and exercise that will assist with everyday physical activities. These are freestyle classes and can be altered to accommodate for anybody with mobility / balance issues.
NOTE: MIOLI is only available at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre.
WHAT SOCIAL ACTIVITIES DO YOU DO IN ACTIVE ADULTS?
Every week we have an Active Adults morning tea in the café from 9am onwards at both Ascot Vale and Keilor East leisure centres.
In addition to this, we have a monthly social event, which is held on a Wednesday, and varies from month to month.
Previously, we’ve had different luncheons / morning teas around Melbourne, visited galleries, gone on walks around the local area, had day trips to Bendigo and the Dandenongs, visited wineries, visited art galleries and exhibitions – so there’s always something to look forward to each and every month.
Our social activities are all completely optional, but are always a great experience.
The cost for our social activities varies depending on the activity, but all the details are advertised well in advance, and can always be booked via Reception.
If you have any queries about our events, you can email contact Rebecca Beard directly – rbeard@belgravialeisure.com.au, or speak to one of our team at Reception.

Active Adults FAQs Expand all
Do I need medical clearance from my Doctor to participate in Active Adults classes?
If you have any concerns about participating in Active Adults classes, particularly if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition, breathing / lung issues, please consult your doctor first.
I have an injury or limited mobility - what options are there for me?
Speak to the instructor before the class starts so they can understand what your limitations are and adjust the exercises accordingly for you to provide some options. Additionally, you can also work at your own pace.
What do I bring to an Active Adults class?
For Aqua classes – be sure to bring a water bottle, a pool towel and any medications you require.
For studio classes – bring a drink bottle, sweat towel, and any medications you require.
If you’d like to have a shower after class, please ensure that you also bring a shower towel, and change of clothes.
What do I wear to an Active Adults Class?
Wear leisure wear that fits your body and allows it to breathe – so long as you feel comfortable in it, and it allows your body to move.
For studio-based classes, you will also need to wear exercise-appropriate footwear (eg, running shoes) that provide cushioning and stability.
- Leggings or work out tights offer great freedom to move such as squats and lunges.
- Lycra / mesh singlets and t-shirts are also great as they allow for free movement of your upper body.
For Aqua classes, we recommend you choose swimwear that you feel comfortable in –
- Women: this could be a one-piece, two-piece swimming costime, short-sleeve or full-sleeve rash vest, full-leg swimming bottoms and / or water-appropriate head covering.
- Men: swimming briefs, shorts or trunks, Optional – water-appropriate singlet / short-sleeve or long-sleeve rash vest
If you’re not sure about it, speak to one of our Active Adults instructors, or reach out to Rebecca Beard – rbeard@belgravialeisure.com.au
